INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES

SOMETIMES IT MAY BE PREFERABLE TO DO NOTHING AT ALL, BUT ONE MUST CONSIDER THE DAMAGE WHICH A CREATURE MAY PRESENT TO THE PUBLIC HEALTH, STORED PRODUCTS, BUILDINGS OTHER SPECIES AND THE ENVIRONMENT. THEREFORE OUR WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT STARTS WITH:

INFORMATION AND ADVICE

In order to manage a creature which has become a nuisance or a pest, it is sometimes sufficient to merely modify its environment or habitat, such that the creature finds it preferable to move elsewhere. Should we discover that this is the case on a customer’s property, the appropriate advice will be given.

The advise may mean educating either staff or the general public and increasing their perception and awareness with regard to i.e. the feeding, sheltering, or releasing of the creatures involved. Alternatively, non-lethal methods of control may be engaged and an action plan would be devised between Search UK and the customer listing the reasons for control.

NON-LETHAL & LETHAL METHODS

HYGIENE

Foraging creatures will be attracted to sites which provide food, water warmth and harbourage. We will advise on the storage, proofing or removal of edible and other waste materials.

PROOFING

A major feature in the control of wildlife is the prevention of access to the habitat into which they are encroaching. This is technically known as ‘proofing’. A variety of materials are used, ranging from simple sand and cement, galvanized wire mesh, to specialised rabbit and dear fencing. We choose the most appropriate materials based upon efficiency, serviceability and life and cost effectiveness.

MODIFICATION OF HABITAT

In essence, modification of habitat means to make the creature unwelcome, or uncomfortable. However, careful consideration will always be given to such elements as appropriate seasons and the non-disturbance of native populations of flora and fauna such as rare flowers, plants, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and other creatures including water life and desirable insects.

APPROVED REPELLENTS

Approved repellents work by interfering with the animals sense of smell. This form of control requires regular visits by our technicians as the various products used are easily diluted by rainfall and lose their effectiveness. Should we specify these forms of treatment, a programme of maintenance visits will be agreed between ourselves and the customer.

DETERRENTS

Should physical deterrents be chosen, specifically; hawks, falcons, gas guns, or recorded distress calls and visual scarer's etc. will be used.

CREATURE RELOCATION

In some circumstances, it is desirable to relocate creatures rather than use more drastic measure of control. By law, these creatures must be indigenous to the UK and Ireland and appropriate licences may need to be obtained. Consideration will be given to relocating to a non-hostile environment where the creature will be able to continue its life in an alternative favourable location.

We will ensure that when relocating any creature that we do not adversely affect the community of the chosen site.

HUMANE TRAPPING

Where it is not possible to relocate, humane live catch traps will be used to remove the creatures from the site.

APPROVED SPRING TRAPS

To avoid the possibility of removing non-target creatures from the control site, the use of specific approved spring traps will be employed, either in specially designed tunnels. Or placed directly into rabbit warrens, spring traps will not be used where rare or protected species are epidemic.

SNARING (Though a legal method of control, is not used by our company except in extreme circumstances where a risk to public health from diseased animals is involved).

SHOOTING

Shooting is usually adopted as the final control method when other measures are not practicable or would not be totally successful. Professional Search UK marksmen using the correct calibre weapon for the creatures being controlled will be engaged to humanely cull with minimum disturbance to the environment. Shooting will be carried out either during the daylight hours or at night dependent upon the situation.

Sound moderators to reduce the sound of gunfire will be used as and when necessary.

Marksmen will employ the use of aids such as high-seats, camouflage hides, vehicles, artificial light (licenses sometimes required) and working dogs dependant upon the conditions, which are to be found at an individual control site.

A site Risk Assessment prior to any shooting operations is made and is discussed in details with the customer. For safety reasons, a site shooting map showing roads, footpaths, railways, watercourses, ponds, dams or lakes, buildings and other areas frequented by the customers staff or general public is drawn up and agreed between the parties. Additional site safety security will be provided should this be necessary.

PESTICIDES AND THEIR CONTROLLED USE

As the very last resort, it may be necessary to use chemical measures to control the pest.

The choice of chemical will be based upon our many years of expertise and the following factors:

Correct identification of the Target Pest.

Our COSHH/Risk Assessment.

Safe and legal transportation.

Humaneness.

Efficacy.

Least toxicity.

Shortest persistence.

Minimum effect upon the environment.

Monitoring & recording of chemicals used.

Removal of chemicals resides from the property upon completion of the programme.

Safe and legal disposal of spent residues and containers.

All of the chemicals used are cleared under the Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986 and label instructions are followed to their fullest extent.
